The Artesia High School Bulldog volleyball team smiles while holding their Zia Classic trophy.

The Bulldog volleyball team came home with hardware Saturday from the Zia Classic tournament in Roswell as the champions of the Silver Bracket.

After defeating Class 5A Carlsbad in four sets, the netters found themselves in a District 4-AAAA preview against Goddard in the bracket's championship match, sweeping the Rockets in three straight, 25-17, 25-16 and 25-19. Junior Kailee Padilla was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Artesia volleyball (4-2) will next head to Hobbs Tuesday for a 6 p.m. match against the 5A Eagles. JV action begins at 5 p.m.

BULLDOG SOCCER

The Bulldog soccer team bumped its record to 7-2 Tuesday with a 2-1 victory over NMMI. The 'Dogs got goals from senior Luis Torres and junior Damian Lopez in the contest, while senior keeper Sebastian Gonzalez had six saves.

The Bulldogs will head to Carlsbad this Tuesday for a 6:30 p.m. game against the Class 5A Cavemen (2-9) in this year's Eddy County War matchup. JV action will begin at 4:30 p.m. Artesia then heads to Los Lunas Saturday to take on the 5A Tigers (0-8).

LADY BULLDOG SOCCER

Artesia High School Lady Bulldog soccer seniors smile and pose for a photo against a cinder-block wall.

The Lady Bulldog soccer team (6-2-2) battled their way to a 2-2 tie Saturday afternoon against fellow Class 4A squad Santa Teresa at The Mack.

The Artesia girls fell into a 2-0 hole in the first half before battling back to even the score. They made it 2-1 when Abigail Jowers cut off a Lady Desert Warrior goal kick and passed to Casey Dickson, who maneuvered around one defender before booting the ball into the net. Dickson also tied the game not long after, getting behind the defense once again.

The teams then battled through two scoreless sessions of overtime en route to the 2-2 tie. The Lady 'Dogs had tied with 5A Clovis on Tuesday, 1-1.

Artesia will host 5A Carlsbad (3-7) at 6:30 p.m. this Tuesday at The Mack, with JV play beginning at 4:30 p.m. The varsity will head to Ruidoso Saturday for an 11 a.m. game against the 1A-3A Lady Warriors.

AHS CROSS COUNTRY

Three Artesia cross country runners smile and hold their medals.

The Bulldog and Lady Bulldog cross country squads headed east Saturday for the LCU Chap Invite in Lubbock, Texas, and put forth some solid efforts at the Chaparral Ridge Golf Course.
